Team Building and Leadership / Encore Global

Challenge

Build a top-tier experiential agency à la Jack Morton within a global AV giant.

In Other Words

In 2019, I was recruited and hired by a former mcgarrybowen colleague to lead Encore Global’s 30-member production design group and transform it into a best-in-class experiential creative department capable of competing with George P. Johnson, Sparks, and other leading experiential agencies.

On the job learning

Introducing a new concept, such as the value of creative IP, at a company as large as Encore (12K+ employees) is akin to turning an oil tanker—it requires time, patience, and extensive short- and long-term strategizing.

The plan for success

  1. Stop designing stuff. Start creating solutions.

  2. Add polish and verve with Art & Copy talent.

  3. Build a culture that celebrates creativity, craft, and innovation.

  4. Leverage the company’s strengths (AV and production) to build internal trust.

  5. (Dream big but) Start small by leveraging existing customer relationships to build the portfolio.

Results

When I joined PSAV in 2019, I inherited a team of 30+ employees across two offices: Orlando, FL (mostly scenic, graphic, and motion designers) and Dallas, TX (mostly content creation and production). In 2022, 11 Experience Designers from a newly acquired subsidiary were added to the department.

During my tenure, we upgraded talent, added capabilities, expanded the team’s scope, and dramatically improved the quality of the work—all of which helped us maintain a 50% New Business success rate over six years while handling 200+ RFPs annually.
